1987 BMW 535i problem with starting
Electrical problem
1987 BMW 535i 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 230k miles
We used the car yesterday with no problems. Tried to start it this morning, there was a loud bang, puff of smoke out the driver side and smell of electrical burn.
Engine will turn over, but will not start.

Wow, sounds like a explosive event. Have you looked under the hood? If so, what did you find?

Head gasket?: no water in oil or visible on exterior. Timing belt?: need to check, but would not explain electrical smell.
No fuses out, all other electrical systems work.
Unless it is the timing belt, I would think it would have to be a short in the ignition system.
I will also check the fuel pump.
Any other suggestions?

Your problem is not a timing belt because there isn't one, check for fuel pressure and spark and compression.
