My instrument panel is constantly changing one minute my speedometer stops, the ABS symbol comes on then off, and "EML" symbol appears and "Service engine light".

I went to autozone for a free diagnostic according to their computer I need a "Crankshaft Position Sensor", but I spoke with a tech at Napa Auto Parts and they said that if that were the case the car would not start.
So now Im confused. Please give me some direction.

The scanning ability of the Autozone personnel is limited to generic scanning, and it can be misleading. First, these are two separate issues here. The first is the check engine and EML light, which I believe are related, due to issues spelled out in several bulletins. Second, the ASC (automatic stability control) sends the road speed signal to the cluster, if the speedo is intermittent then there may be a problem in the ASC control module. A more directed scan can be obtained at the dealer or at a shop that specializes in BMW.
