Blue smoke comes out of the exhaust at start up. Runs okay some tapping at start up. Runs smoothly after.

Some tapping at start up may be okay, but the smoke is an indicator that the engine is burning oil.

Start with checking the oil and seeing if it is low. If not, then it may just be a slow drip from the valve guides.

If the oil level is okay, I would suggest running a quick compression check just to make sure the engine is in good shape. The fact that it runs well, I suspect this will be okay, however, it is good to just make sure.

Let me know what you find with this and we can go from there.

Thanks, I left out on thing it likes to do this on cold starts. If its warm out no smoke. Just started when it started getting cold. Other issue I just looked at the PVC valve and the rubber seal it fits into is bad. Get back to you after checking cylinder compression.

Okay. This doesn't change the causes of blue smoke but it could point more to a rubber component which would be the valve seals. Again, if this it then I suspect the compression will be fine. Let me know what you find. Thanks

Hey I checked the piston compression.
Cyl1. 115 psi dry 125 psi wet
Cyl2. 110 psi dry 123 psi wet
Cyl3. 110 psi dry 124 psi wet
Cyl4. 115 psi dry 123 psi wet

Okay. Compression is low but it is even. Standard compression on this engine is 171 PSI. Minimum is 119 PSI.

You may not like this recommendation but you are about to open a can of worms with this issue. You are burning oil and have low compression. This points to ring issues. I would suggest just checking the oil on a regular basis and make sure it stays full and drive it until it starts making noise or fails. The reason is, you are going to end up with an engine rebuild or replacement trying to fix this smoking issue. However, the car runs and is doing its job but just smokes a little so I would not chase that issue. Basically just start setting some money aside each pay check until you have enough saved for an engine replacement/rebuild and then just drive it until it needs it. The longer it goes, the more it is paying you back. However, if it does fail, you have the money ready to just get it fixed.

If you want to do another test, you can do a cylinder leakage test but the low compression shows it is leaking somewhere and the smoke points to the rings. However, the leakage test will confirm this. Let me know if you are not familiar with this and we can go from there.

This is just what I would do if I found myself in your shoes. Let me know if you have questions.

Ohh, well that is not good. I got my moneys worth out of it. I put a heavier oil in the engine (10w-30)this helped but only temporarily. I appreciate your input. I'll probably just get a new car when this one goes. It's starting to have starter issues too. Starter is having trouble turning the engine over. Just signs of worse probably to come.

Yeah. Assuming it is not a weak starter it could be the bearings starting to fail. If that's the case then I would agree. It is not worth exploring to find it. Just drive until it fails. Who knows you may get years out of it but my bet is less than a year depending on how much you drive.

Please let me know if you need anything else. Just make sure you keep the oil level up so you can maximize the time out of it. Thanks
