2001 Audi A4 camshaft tensioner

The noise is coming from the tensioner I believe I took the valve cover off and started the car and the tensioner is moving up and down I assume the tensioner should stay snug and the chain should ride on the guide is this correct if so is it easy enough to replace the tensioner

Do you have a 1.8 L? This engine uses a timing belt.

This car has a 1.8L it has a timing belt this is a chain & tensioner on the back side of the camshaft

O.K. There is an adjuster on tensioner small hex screw.
You can try a small adj. Do not over tighten. As long as guide is not worn. Also see if cam marks line up with mark on bearing.

Thank you for answering me is this normal for the tensioner to go up and down as the car is running or should the tensioner just have tension on the chain the piston on the tensioner goes up and down like it is riding on a lobe of the cam

Should not move it's purpose is to keep chain tight.
