Governor gears are stripped. The gears are under a cover held in place by a metal clip. I was told by a transmission shop they can fix it in the car.

On my 87, the gear had an hourglass shape, from being worn in the middle. At first, it would shift after warming up, then after a while not at all. Replace the gear and the tranny should work.
