I took my TL for a standard service recently to the dealership. Before the service I noticed transmission fluid from under my car when in park. The spots were sporadic, and I assume were occurring from the fluid leaking out while I was driving the car.

The dealer said I probably have a crack in the top of the transmission and it is leaking out the top when I am driving.. More so when I am up and down hills. He said the fluid was down about a quarter (still 3/4 full). He already suggested, without diagnostic, that I would be looking at a new transmission (4k in parts, 3k in service). He said I need to come back for a diagnostic, they topped the fluid off. I am hesitant to spend this kind of money on what should be a pretty decent transmission for a 60k Acura. Dont really trust these people.. They sucked 1400 out of me last month for a new radiator they said was leaking.. I was in a rush and got the job done; this is too much money to not investigate further.

Do you have any ideas of what else it could be?

If it is a crack, is there anything to do other than replace the whole transmission?

p.S. The car is running just fine.. No gear shifting issues whatsoever.

Warm Regards,

Tom

Hi trice8121,

Thank you for the donation.

Transmission housings would not leak for no reasons. Most likely it could be a loose hose or joint and that would not require too much to repair.

You should get a second opinion. If possible, clean up the oil and test drive, than have a visual of the leaks to locate where it is coming from.

Check the tightness of the transmission drain bolt at the bottom of the transmission and the transmission FILLER bolt at the top of the transmission housing. Look down between the brake master cylinder and the throttle body, there should be a 17mm nut at the top of the trans and 3/8 hole for the drain bolt. Might be possible that 1 of them is loose or the mechanic missed the funnel and spilled fluid during refill.
They should be hand tight with a short ratchet. You will need an extension to reach the filler bolt
