I have the vehicle listed above with the 2.4L Ecotek. It has been fuel burn issue since about 100,000 but has been closely monitored and kept up on oil changes. Drove great out to work, went to leave work in the afternoon and got the service Stabil Trak and low power mode warnings. Pulled over in the parking lot and shut the vehicle off and would not restart, it tried to turn over but would not fire, eventually draining my battery trying to figure it out I had it towed to my garage. Charged up the battery and put on an OBD scanner and got P228D as my permanent code "Fuel pressure Regulator 1 Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure to High" guessing this would be the high-pressure fuel pump. I get solid pressure all the way up to the high-pressure pump when I check through the bleeder valve.

I have checked spark plugs which have spark although seem to be dry. As well as tried to feed it fuel through the throttle body and get it to fire up with no luck. Figured if this would fire it then I would spend the money on the high-pressure fuel pump, but it didn't work. I'm wondering where to look next as maybe it is a timing chain issue but before I open that all up, I thought I would check here if someone had a similar issue.

Thanks

Yep, a timing chain issue will cause this code and the engine not to start. I can tell if the engine is hurt or not if you upload a short video of the engine cranking from under the hood. Also, you can tell if you do a compression test which I have provided a guide to help you.

The P228D code for a 2013 GMC Terrain indicates a problem related to the fuel pressure regulator, specifically "Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure Too High." It can be caused by the high-pressure pump not pumping fuel.

200k this has a high probability of being the problem. Please upload videos in your response to the problem so we can see what's going on.

Hi,

If the spark plugs were wet, then I would think it is related to something other than fuel delivery. The part that is confusing me is it won't start with starting fluid, but it does have ignition spark.

As far as the code is concerned, the problem is related to the high-pressure fuel pump. You really need a scan tool to diagnose this.

Do me a favor. I attached the description and diagnostics. Take a look through them and let me know if this is something you can do.

Let me know.

Joe

Thanks Jacobandnick and Ken L. I'm going to try the simplest first before getting into elctrical and go with Ken's thread. I uploaded a video of the engine cranking. I will be doing a compression test tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks for the insight on this.

Thanks for the video, yep, the engine sounds hurt, sorry. You can do a compression test to confirm the damage. I would install a used or rebuilt engine.
