The truck listed above is an XLT model. For a while now the fuel gauge has been doing odd things, it will show, let's say, 200km until empty then show 40km until empty, now the car won't start at all, I turn the key and there's the clicking, like it's trying to start but doesn't, my first thought was the battery but the battery light hasn't come on.

Hi,

The battery light won't turn on with a weak battery. It is used to identify when the alternator is failing.

If you can, try jump-starting it first. If it is a weak battery, this should allow it to start. If it does start, take it to a parts store and have them load test the battery and confirm the alternator is performing.

Here is a link you may find helpful:

If you can't have that done, here is a link that explains how to perform a load test on the battery without tools. Try this:

Based on what you described, it sounds like the battery has failed. Note that a weak battery can cause electrical issues as well, such as the fuel gauge.

Try this and let me know what you find. Also, if I can help, let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Just jumped started the car and it fired straight up, new battery on its way.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards,

Hi Dean,

You are very welcome and thanks for the update. I had a feeling that was the issue. If possible, let me know when you get the new one in and if everything is operating properly. Also, make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight.

One other thought, when the new one is in and the engine is running, check to make sure it is charging. If the truck has a gauge, you will be able to tell. If there is no gauge, here is a link that explains how to check:

Let me know.
