My car's heater will only blow warm air when I'm accelerating down the road. Most of the time it doesn't warm up if parked. When I stop at a light or stop sign it blows cold air then turns back to warm when I start moving again.

Check your coolant level first, if that's ok theck to see if the coolant fan is running all the time or cycling on and off. It sounds like you may have a restriction or blockage in the heater core. You may be able to have it flushed.

How do I check that? Or where can I take my car to have it checked and not get ripped off or pay an ungodly amount? I know nothing about cars.

You probably need to go to a shop, as for which one I don't know. Do you have friends, neighbors or co-workers that you can ask?
