My gas light was on when I parked my rabbit for 2 weeks. Started it up this am and barely started, smelt like something was burning and when I went to press the gas it was making a knocking noice. Kind of puttering. I do ride my car when the gas light comes on. Not sure if the gas pump is out or going out but the knocking is kind of concerning.

First check your fluids. Then start the car if it will idle and make sure your pulleys are all turning with the belt. If not have someone crank it for you and watch the pulleys. Youre looking for one of them to be stuck and not turning. If they are and you've got plenty of fuel in the tank, then you could indeed have a bad fuel pump

It can make a light knocking sound if the pumps not putting out enough fuel. Its called dieseling because it sounds like a diesel. Is that the kind of knocking youre talking about?

When I press on my gas pedal the noise gets louder and there is no power. Should I have my car towed in or drive in?

Id have it towed just to be safe but if theres damage it sounds like its already been done. Let me know if you've got any questions on the prognosis when you get it

Do you think a fuel pump failure could damage the engine?

The fuel pump failure wont hurt the engine. Once fuel pressure is restored the engine will run fine if the pumps the problem

Listen to this! So I had my 2008 VW Rabbit towed in to a local VW Dealer to have my car checked out. I got the call later in the day and was told my car was running great that it passed all "computer test" and test drive. I was shocked! What could have happened, by far very weird.
