My engine coolant is low and I need to know what type of coolant to get. Also can I just top off the reservoir or should I flush the system? (08 f-150 4.2L V6, 45000 miles)

Hi:
There are so many different types of coolant anymore. Years ago, they all used the same. However, things have changed and it seems each manufacturer uses a different type that shouldn't be mixed with another type. Therefore, for the past couple years, I have been purchasing a universal coolant that can be mixed with any of the others made.

As far as a flush, if it has never been done, I would recommend it. The coolant in the vehicle may still appear clean and it could be strong, but coolants become very acidic after about 5 years and should be replaced.

If I do flush it, do you recommend any specific brand?

No specific brand. I would, however, recommend that you use a universal type so you can add anything to it later.

Glad to help. Just an FYI. Tonight, I drilled out the 3rd broken engine oil dip stick in 2 weeks. All have been on Ford trucks (2003 to 2008) and all were stuck in the tube. Make sure to lube the top section where it fits into the tube. Based on what I see, this is going to become a common issue and they are a pain to get out.
