Engine management light?

The engine management light has gone on, on my dashboard. Not sure why this has happened, have taken the car to a local garage who said something about the EDI? Needing to be replaced, quoted approx £250. Looking for help as to what the cause if the light coming on could be

Hello,

Anytime the check engine light gets illuminated, the first thing you should do is to scan for the trouble codes.
Typically you can take it to your local auto parts store and they will have the tool that you can use to retrieve the codes. Those codes can help determine what might be the issue.

Many times the engine light will come on for emission related issues. Other times it can be for any number of engine management sensors, which may or may not impact the way the car drives.
