Car makes faint whirring noise/ soft rattling noise when accelerating in 2nd, rd, 4th or 5th gear.

I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla Verso 1.8 and it is making a whirring noise when I accelerate. This does not happen in 1st gear, only in 2nd - 5th gear. It is not too loud as you do not notice this when the radio is on. It does not seem to affect the performance or acceleration of the car.

Does the noise occur when accelerator is depressed with gears in neutral?
Does turning the A/C on or off makes any difference?
1st gear ratio might be too low therefore the noise is covered by engine operatin noise as it needs to turn at a higher rpm.

Locating source of noise is never easy even with physical vehicle.
