My emissions light came on and stayed on, filters, coils, various sensors and the oil were all changed but still failed. The head was taken off and the Two cams shafts were broke and 4 valves replaced. However my car is making an awful groaning noise when stopped or ticking over and it never done this before even when it was running on 3 cylinders the mechanic even said that it is annoying him as he cant get to the bottom of it.
Can you offer any further info as its driving brilliant only for this noise.
Thanks

Sounds as if there is a problem with the head still, start with re checking the valve clearances and make sure you have good oil supply to the over head gear.

Thank you so much for your reply.
I have since found the answer as I read another article about faulty cam shafts so I thought id run it past the garage.
The mechanic took the New Cam shafts out and measured them both and one was some many mm shorter than the other.
The mechanic then tried cams shafts from another Astra he had in the garage into mine and this stopped the noise !
I have now got new set of cam shafts and am very happy.
I hope that this information is useful to others.
