A screeching noise is coming from my air con compressor and the belt is slipping and screeching too. RAA came out to look at the car and told me that was what the problem is. The noise has been on and off intermittently for a few days now. Any ideas how much this is going to cost me to have fixed?

Prices vary across u.S. But i'd figure around $300 but that may be low as it's a foreign car so prices are higher.

Thanks so, much for your replies.

I spent $55 at my local mechanic today. Didn't drive the car yesterday and it didn't make any noise for me this morning. Mechanics tightened the fan belt and it didn't make any noise for them either.

Maybe not the air con compressor after all!

Thanks so much for providing this service. I don't know much about cars, have three kids and no-one in the house who does know about cars. So I did a bit of a panic when I was told I shouldn't drive the car. It was a relief to be able to ask the question on-line. Thanks so much.

I forgot about the belt lol. But one thing to keep in mind is that belts recommended replacement is 60,000 miles along with the tensioner so it may be worn out or close to it. Anytime yo have aproblem as long as there are no lights flashing or on it's pretty safe to drive. If the engine light comes on and says check engine, have it scanned and of course oil ight check oil right away. We try to help here.
