WHY CAR WON'T START ALL THE TIME?

2005 aveo will start today drove about45 miles to work sit all day got out would not start after an hour finally started got home started right back up then would not start for two days then it started right up runs great when its start when it don;t acts like it wet and tries but won't just keep trying. Why won't it start?

When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?
