The transmission on the Taurus is located in the engine compartment, so yes, noises from the transmission would come from the engine compartment. As for the thumping sound, I would say that sounds more like a transmission mount or an axle problem that a transmission problem. Could you elaborate a little more (i.E. When does this noise happen, how loud is it, is it a pining sound or more of a thud etc.).

When the taurus is in park and or neutral, it will make this thumping sound in the engine compartment; but soon as I put the car back in drive, the thumping sound goes away. Finally after a few weeks went by, I went to the store and went in and came back out; I tryed to start the car, but it wouldnt start. Whats the problem?

It's hard to pinpoint an exact problem yet, but it sounds like an issue at the flex-plate--the link between the engine and the torque converter. When you try to start it, does is thud or cluck or does it actually turn over and just not start?

Okay, so from my gathering of information, it sounds as if you may have multiple problems. I would start at the no starting condition and figure out what that is.

Begin by checking the fuel pressure and the spark. Let me know what you find from checking that.
