Transmission problem

I was driving my 04 chevy malibu on friday night, all of the sudden it started smoking really bad. I got to a gas station and 90% of the Trans fluid poured out. Any ideas on where it came from and how to fix the problem. I replaced the tranny filter and gasket last night but I did not want to put oil in it til I got some type of knowlage of what was going on. Please help

Check the transmission cooler on the radiator and lines back to the tranny/check the tranny dipstick/tube

The oil is leaking from the axel point. Leading to tire so I need to know how to tighten down that point
