I need instruction on how to replace the starter where I can do it myself. If possible from the top and not the under side. I dont have a lift and wont be able to do it from under the car.

I do not believe that this is possible short dismantling a fair proportion of the engine accessories and manifolds to get at it, I will pass it on to a BMW specialist just in case he has some solution for this problem.

The M54 motor is usually quite easy to work on, but this operation could require the removal of the intake manifold to gain access to the starter bolts.

Also, be sure its the starter and not the drive-away protection.
