alternator workshop! indicator has come on in my 2003 Volkswagen passat. Does that mean I need a new alternator or could I possibly have a different problem? It came on briefly multiple times, followed by the battery indicator. Then both indicators go off. I am confused by the "workshop" in the warning light. What does it mean? Thanks for your help.

Test the output of the alternator with the engine running. It should be between 13.2 and 14.2 volts. Preferably 13.8. Next check condition of battery with everything off. 12.8 volts. Have the battery load tested as well.
