Will not start but has a faint whirring sound?

My car listed above sedan stopped working and will not start but has a faint whirring sound when the ignition key is turned. The repair shop said their diagnostics showed “failed the compression test” so they told me to take it to the Toyota dealership for further evaluation. This car has served me well for many years and I have heard that 187,000 miles is not too many miles for such a vehicle. Plus, the A/C system is blowing very cold and then hot even after the AC shop charged the system. Is it time to just get another vehicle?

Hi,

If this happened all at once, the compression loss is caused by something that broke. Is it possible for you to record it cranking and upload it for me to hear?

I suspect the timing chain has broken or jumped time. If you remove the valve cover, you will be able to see the timing chain and be able to determine if it has broken. Oftentimes, if I can hear the engine cranking, I can tell you if that is the likely issue.

Now for the bad news. This vehicle's engine is an interference engine. If the chain did break, there is a chance of internal engine damage.

I attached an exploded view of the timing chain. If you can, remove the cover and inspect to see if the chain is loose or broken, or if any of the camshaft gears appear damaged.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Thank you for the commentary; I surmised from your comments that it’s time to get a new vehicle having had much success with the old car. How do I make a contribution to your service platform? I recall that previously there was a button that allowed us to send funds via PayPal.

Hi,

First, you are very welcome. I wish I had better news for you. As far as a contribution, this is a free site and there is no need to contribute.

If you want to offer anything, we have a go fund me page. However, this is by no means required.

Take care of yourself and feel free to come back anytime in the future.
