Hello I have a 2002 Saturn SL2 1.9 DOHC. About 2 weeks ago I started getting a ticking sound while driving on the highway. I checked the oil it was a half a quart low, I topped it off with 5W-30 and drove for about 400 miles, the ticking gets louder when I accelerate. I changed the oil and also used a lucas additive to thicken the oil to stop the noise but its not working. The noise is coming from the passenger side on the top end of the block. Not sure if its lifter tick, or rod knock. How much does it usually cost to repair the lifters? Is it easy to do at home?

Are you sure the ticking noise isn't a timing chain issue?Does it kinda sound like something being sawed at higher rpms?

If it's the timing chain you will have to replace the timing chain with a kit. Pop off the valve cover and see if there is any slack or play on the timing chain where the top timing chain guide is. Let me know what you find.
