What causes it to run rough and hard to put into gear

Hard to put into gear, also not getting up to speed and smell fumes oil leaking and water disappearing

You have a few problems here and
1. If manual transmission, have the clutch system checked. It could be the reason it is not getting tu p to speed.

2. You need to check where the oil leak is coming from. Any oil getting to the exhaust would result in burning smells.

3. Losing coolant means there is a leak somewhere and a pressure test and visual inspection is required to locate the source.
