Hi, Joe, I went to a garage I know a couple guys there. It is a garage that does mainly change oil, and simple, not complicated things and has lots of mechanics, but I know three of them there, and got my oil changed today and then talked to one and asked if he had a scanner, and he said the owner did but wanted $45.00 to scan. I told him I would pay him $20.00 under the table to scan my car, which he did. Got 6 codes, will list them here. He said the scanner I have will not be specific to my car model such as the owners, in other words, mine selects Kia, but the owners also selects Kia Rio so, the difference. Here are the codes: P0038M, P1693, PO340, P0136, P1166, PO501. They wrote the descriptions in Spanish, so I need to go find a site and write down the English descriptions, which I will do later but at least you have the codes. Surprised me that the car is running. Ha.

Hi, Joe. Thank you very much for the code identifications which I saw very good by clicking on them. I know the oxygen sensor problem is because I removed the catalytic converters and a mechanic also destroyed the connector to first catalytic converter. Near exhaust. Also, the speedometer does not work, so the speed sensor code, but what I really wanted is for you to help me decide what would cause it to just stall in strange places, like entering my driveway, or on a speed bump and also sometimes the transmission is not engaged good and then it goes after a bit. Like I said before this car has a mind of it's own. Darn it. The banks here in Panama won't loan me money to buy a new car due to my age of 79 years old.
Thanks for any help you can give me, Joe. Have a good one. Mike

Hi Mike:

Honestly, with the O2 sensors not working, I would think that is causing the engine to run very rich. What happens is when these sensors are not working properly, it changes what is called fuel trims. It will go into what is known as a "closed loop." The result is the computer adjusts fuel mixture somewhat rich because it doesn't know what else to do and the vehicle should continue running until repairs can be made.

As far as the transmission, check the basics first. Confirm the fluid is clean and full. Also, I will tell you that the speed sensor may be having an adverse affect on shifting (if that is what is happening).

One last thought. The banks here will give you money regardless of age, so maybe you should more. LOL I never heard of such a thing. We call the age discrimination. And my friend, I'm behind you but not by too far.

Joe
