There is an annoying whining noise in the power steering the minute the engine starts. I have changed my power steering pump, power steering hose and even my steering rack but, I still have that annoying whining. Can it be something else?

Hi,

First, if you are using a re-manufactured pump, they are known to make noise. Second, is the sound the same as the first pump that was replaced? I ask because chances are the system hasn't been properly bled.

What I do is simply safely lift the front wheels. Then, with the engine off, I turn the steering from lock to lick slowly several times. Recheck the fluid level and refill if needed. I will do this a few times until the air bubbles in the fluid begin to stop.

Now, I am also going to provide the directions for removal and replacement of the pump. Take a look through them and confirm nothing was missed. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

1. NOTE: If installing a new power steering pump, the unions supplied with the new pump should be removed and retained for further use.

Using the special tool, install a new 0-ring seal onto the power steering pump to steering gear line union.
1. Push the 0-ring seal onto the special tool.
2. Locate the special tool onto the union and install the 0-ring seal.
2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
3. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
