Could automatic transmission failure cause a no start problem?

While driving as I went to accelerate car suddenly felt as if it slipped into neutral. I coasted to a stop & turned off car. Now the car won't start. Starter spins and engine turns over but will not start. I'm pretty mechanical but I'm disabled and haven't dealt with a fwd transaxle before and not sure where to start. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

sounds like the engine stalled. i would have that checked first as you said it cranks and will not start. it may have either a bad fuel pump or a possible timing belt failure
