i have a jetta 1.8 t 2001. my auto 4-speed transmission sometimes slips nd goes into neutral between 2nd and third gear. i also have a problem with both the abs and traction control lights turning on when i start the car occasionally. To top it off, twice within the last week, i turned the car on and the engine sounded like an extremely powerful vacuum cleaner turned on. I was wondering whether all these problems are interelated through the speed sensors mounted on the transmission and what it is if not. Thank you.

My first advise would be to have the alternator and battery checked out. It is not uncommon for VWs to have weird lights coming on and transmission shifting issues when the voltage drops.

you might have plenty of juice to start the car, but it will not allow everything to function, as the computer shuts down electronic controls to keep the engine running.
