Removal & Installation

1. Release fuel system pressure. Locate fuel filter, on frame rail, right side of engine. Disconnect fuel hoses from filter. Remove fuel filter
and bracket.

2. To install, push fuel hoses onto fuel filter. Secure hose clamps/connectors. Install fuel filter and bracket. Tighten bracket fasteners to specification. Operate vehicle and check for leaks.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

We tried to work on the fuel filter of my 2001 Kia Sportage today, but apparently we need a special tool to open it. We were able to remove it from the fuel line, but the tool is needed for us to go further. Been to Autozone, etc. Been online to various repair forums and most say it's a simple plastic tool I need. One person said he bought a tool for a different filter and filed it down to fit.
I know the tool goes and I'm supposed to depress tabs with it and push in towards the filter to open it. I cannot find anything about the tool I need, though, aside from what I've mentioned, and the two auto stores I visited today were no help at all.
If anyone can explain or tell me about the kind of tool I need, I'd appreciate it. If it is something I can get at an auto store, I'd prefer to go there than to a Kia dealership, where prices are out of this world for parts/tools/repairs, etc. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Should look similar to one of these below and check autozone's website. contact them online and request a parts specialist to assist you to ensure you get the correct size for your filter..

If its hoses on the fuel filter-cut the hose off and get a high pressure fuel hose-if not you probably need a quick disconnect tool-

Had the tool, actually 2 different style tools; one plastic, scissor type and the other more like a split rachet. Anyway, after trying both tools, and almost 3 hours of pinching and tugging and twisting, finally was able to remove. Oh forgot, took a straight saw and cut the 1"-1 1/2" lead from the old filter first. The main problem was "NO ROOM TO WORK" much too compact for large hands. Good News though; new pump is in and vehicle seems to be running ok!

Let's look in the engine compartment, near the fuse box.

Posted a picture/diagram below.
