Can you diagnose my car issue?

I was driving down the road the other day and out of the blue, my car started sputtering and died. The fuel pump is working and all the coil packs are sparking just fine. I noticed that there was no oil so I put some in and it still wont start. There was no violent knocking noise before it died so I don't think we blew and rod or the crank shaft, but I can't figure out what's wrong with it. Can you help? The car is a 2000 VW Golf 1.8t

i would start with a compression test to verify a timing belt.

fuel pressure needs to be checked.

unless you have a compression tester and fuel pressure gauge.

you can rent both tools at a parts store.
