Sometimes when im driving and coming to a stop sign I step on the brakes of my 2000 toyota echo and it would work fine until the speed decreases to 30 or 20 mph, then the brakes would get really hard and not work, so I shift from drive to neutral and the brakes would go back to working, but then I would hear a loud intake of air from the engine. Do you know what's wrong with it?

Engine vacuum could be low, vacuum hose leaking to the brake booster, check valve and brake booster itself-

Thanks for answering. Now im wondering, because after coming to a complete stop by shifting to neutral, when I shift to drive or reverse the car shakes like its going to die but if I step on the gas it goes back to normal and when the mph is between 0-5 mph the engine shakes like its going to die. Is this related to the brake booster too or something else?

Is the check engine light coming On?

Could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.

Ok. So I got new spark plugs, ignition coils, MAF sensor, brake booster, oil change, and oil filter. Still got same prob. I checked the check engine light and it said the car was miss firing. Also if I floor the gas pedal, the engine revs for 1 to 2 sec before accelerating & if I let go of the gas pedal while it revs then the car just goes back to normal without accelerating.
