My ac is freezing up causing the belt to squeal. I turn it off/on and it frees back up. Is there anything I can do to service it to make this stop or should I start shopping a new compressor?

First thing you need to do is to check the belt tension and condition. If it requires adjustment or a new belt, that should be done first.

Next, check the harmonic damper, incorporated into the crank pulley. If it is bad, it can result in squealing as well.

If it is a compressor fault, most probably the engine would stall and not cause the noise only.
