2000 Mercury Sable want turn over

Car got a little overheated, oil level was low, but did not throw a rod or was knocking. The car just shut-down while running.

Check oil level when pressure gets low switch shuts off car kinda sounds like what happened from question supplied

Does this car have a safety switch which will shut the car down that needs to be reset some how?

If the car turns over but does not start then check to see if inertia switch is activated if it is push butt on it. It's in trunk rh side. If it doesn't turn over then try putting wrench on crank and see if it will. You can do it with key off

Mind you it is front while drive with a 3.0 engine. 24 valve. Easier way to get to the crank shaft would be how?

There should be a couple of wires going to inertia switch it may be under panel to hide it. It requires actually opening the trunk and looking on your part. As far being front wheel drive try socket with ratchet attached otherwise pull the wheel liner out of the way and turn wheel all the way to right to gain access. If you are unable to do either take to your favorite garage and they will do both for you
