2000 Ford Mustang Repair Question

When i arm the anti theft ,i cannot cause it to alarm either pulling the door handle or opening the door with the window down.Is this normal
When i press the remote lock twice the lights flash and the horn chirps but otherwise it doesnt seem to be armed,cause in no way can i set off the alarm .any info will help as my car was recently broken into and i cannot stop worrying they may try again.

Is it an alarm and not just a keyless remote entry system?
Do the dome lights come on when the door is opened? Do you hear the buzzer with the door open and the key in the ignition? If not, fix the door switch(es).
