I have an 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette Premier, recently was told by a mechanic that my OD is out in transmission. Driving at 40 mph Tach running at 2400-2500 rpm, which seemed normal to me. However, new found issue, when letting off the gas, if I have it in Drive, the rpm instantly drop just below 1000 rpm, about idle speed, just like it would if you put it in neutral. Shifts smooth, no noise, still getting 21-22 mpg. Shift so smoothly, I cannot tell if it is going into 4th or not, but if I drop it into 3rd at 60 mph, tach stays the same at about 24-2500 rpm, slight jump but go back to the 24-2500 rpm. Is this a major problem, what is the problem, is it an easy fix, or expensive to fix

I can feel mine go into forth by counting shifts. It changes sound rpm drops 3 times from dead start. And at 50 + if I let off/on on gas slightly it feels like its a stick shift with no slippage rpm wise. Expense to fix would depend on what parts are causing fail. But if you are not having driving/mileage problems you could ignore it.

Transmission fluid and condition okay-if so do below

A pressure tests by a transmission specialist can reveal the problems
