99 cougar problems

ok so i got a 99 mercury cougar that when i was going down the road it started losing power when i hit the gas, and also would start making a clicking sound everytime i hit the gas...wouldnt get over sixty, then wouldnt get over fifty, so i just pulled over and turned it off, smoked pretty bad too...now it want start back...all the fluids are good and the tempt gage said it wasnt running hot either....what could be wrong???

could be a transmission failure. does the fluid smell burned up??

if the converter is locked up.

start from scratch, check the batter and cables, you need fuel pressure and spark. something is missing
