'99 Cougar engine light

My engine light is on all the time. My car runs great. I'm worried that it will not pass emissions. What could this mean?

With the light on your car it fail's the emissions test automatically. You need to go to a auto part's store like auto zone and have them scan your car for code's. Let me know what the exact code number's are.
