Hi delafuente,

It could be a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor, loose wiring connectors or a faulty meter. Test would be required to identify the source.

Hi Barbara,

If the D4 is still blinking after driving, there must be a sensor that is not functioning.

Bridge the SCS connector behind the glove compartment and count the number of blinks on the D4 with ignition switch turned on. Let me know and we will see what needs to be done.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for the offer, but guess I am too old to be looking for a new job in a new place.

One of our mods is from Guam, maybe he can help you ;)

I have a 1995 honda accord with 180,000 mi. The speedometer doesn't go above 20. If I go faster then 20 the needle sits still. If I go less then it bounces between 10 and 30 mph. I've replace the VSS and still does not work. How can I find out if it is the cable or the instrument panel? Or what other things should I look at before spending more money on this issue and still not getting it to work?

The speedometer is not driven by cable. The VSS sends the signal to the meter and it appears that is not responding. You should be looking in to replacing the speedometer.

Honda, Accord, 1996, 140k miles. Speedometer seems to have a mind of its own, it just won't work and because that doesn't work, my odometer doesn't work either. Most of the time, the speedometer just stays on zero, other times (rarely) it flickers wildly. But I kind of found a way to get it to work.

From rest, I would accelerate slowly, holding the accelerator down just enough for the car to start moving and keep it there (constant acceleration) until the speedometer starts to move. But I only succeed 40% of the time.

But thats not good enough, that means 60% of the time I don't know how fast I'm going also I don't know how far I've gone. It's a used car, got it 2-3 years ago, problems started only during this summer of '06.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

Do you have a tach and if that works you should suspect the speedometer it self. There are tests and the only other thing that could be wrong is the send on the tranny. If the tach works the sender is working.

Chances are it is the VSS. It is located on the back of the transmission, underneath the intake manifold. It can be a pain in the a$$ to get to, but it is a relatively easy fix. They cost about $110-$150, and they come with a little pin that is very important. DO NOT lose it.

Hey there, just found this site. 1995 Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, tachometer works. Speedometer and odometer infrequently. Here is my problem: Car is driving fine, shifts smooth, no signs anything wrong. Suddenly, car refuses to shift. Turn car off, rest, restart, will go into gear, but then acts up again. This is when notice that when the odometer and speedometer are functioning, car will shift. When they stop functioning, it does not shift. I figured VSS. Replaced VSS, tested resistance on input and output sensors (both 500 ohms). What am I missing? Is there a way to test if the TCM is getting signals from sensors? Is there a fuse I am missing? Any help would be appreciated. I bought this car for my son to make my life easier, and now it is just sitting there. Runs pretty, goes nowhere.

Welcome. Glad you found us.

I suspect you have a speedometer issue due to what you have done but here is a pretty quick test that we can run through when you have the issue acting up. Let me know what you find but I am thinking you will need to replace the gauge cluster.

Thanks
