I recently put a 2.3L 16V engine from a 2001 model transit into my 99 model smiley, everything went well with the mechanical changeover but now that its in, the bugger wont start. Engine was running fine in the 2001 van. We used the ecu and engine harness complete from the 01 model which I now learn has the pats (immo) software onboard and of course my 99 smiley hasn`t got any (hardware nor software, Australian model). So I figure it must be the immo (pats) software built into the 01 ecu that wont allow it to start as it doesn`t see a signal coming fom the key as my key doesnt have a chip. The donor vehcle (01) is still available and I could strip the transponder ring and key out of it and transfer it to the 99 model but I don't know where the wiring would go (plug in) as there`s no plug for it under the dash that I can see in my van built for Australia nor what other problems it might bring. That would seem the easy way but its slowly turning into a nightmare. Does anyone know which wires it connects into on the ecu. Loom or under the dash maybe.(Pats I believe stands for passive anti theft system similar lingo as immo) Or does any one know if these 01 ecu`s can have their pats disabled and/or how to do it. The other way I thought about would be to use the 99 ecu as it doesn`t have the pats in it but also doesn`t have the right mapping for the 2.3L as the old motor was a 2.0L 8V job. I`ve tried it and it will start the motor but it runs terrible. There are plenty of ford falcon jockeys over here that will do j3 chip kits for eec-v ecu`s with pats disabled for about $120 (or remapping/tuning a bit more) but their all for big sixes or V8`s over here and no-one wants to know about my transit 4 cyl job nor do they have maps for it. Can anyone here tell me how difficult it would be to remap my 99 ecu with the maps from either my 2001 ecu or install a fresh tuned set if there is such a beastie available to download somewhere. Say all you gurus out there give me some fair dinkum answers please! I`ve been looking on fleebay and finding some immo killer type software very cheaply but don't know if they work at all or on the petrol motor ecu, they mostly seem to be for diesel motors. Both my ecu`s are eec-v and both appear to be physically the same though software wise altogether different I would assume. Has anyone else gone this route before? Really would love to hear from some of you with the answer to my questions.

Why don't you use the ecm form the car you installed the engine too. If you dont' have the matching parts it will never start. A Pro normally has to program the computer to your car anyhow. We don't have that in the U.S. For that year anyhow but from your description that is what is wrong.
