I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota that has a oil leak from the rear differential on the casing side (not the drive shaft side). Is this just a casing seal that needs to be replaced or is there probably something else going on?

Hello,

Typically when the differential leaks it is due to a bad seal/gasket.
Sealing that differential cover is fairly simple.
All you will have to do is first drain the fluid then take the bolt off to remove the cover.
Be sure to clean the mounting surface before applying sealant.

Then fill up the differential with appropriate fluid. It takes about 2.5 quarts of fluid.
