I have a 99 dodge avenger v-6 motor. My starter went out the other day. I got starter rebuilt and put back on. When I hooked up the battery got some sparking from positive cable nothing major. When I went to start the car got smoke from battery terminals and now have no juice from battery. All lights/radio work when hooked up to jumper cables. Is my battery/connection at battery the problem or could there be some wires crossed in the starter from the guy rebuilding it. I have no idea what the problem could be.

If the starter cable from the battery had been improperly installed, it could have shorted itself to ground. If battery was removed instead of only disconected, check the polarity.

Recheck the starter cable and have the battery charged and tested.

Check the battery terminal connections for looseness and contaminations. Clean and retighten.
