Car will not start after running out of gas

It is possible that running out of fuel was detrimental to the fuel pump. This does not happen every time, but can happen. Some contributing factors are high mileage on the pump, and whether or not the pump runs on lower fuel levels causing it to run warmer, less the surrounding fuel to cool it.
