Once key is in the ignition and is switched to the start position, nothing happens. Battery is good, I know this because all lights turn on, but with the key turned on, there is dead silence. Not even a clicking sound, but after several tries the car finally starts. My guess was the key was not making contact somewhere, but I'm sure that's wrong. Any Ideas?

What you need to do is check to see if there is power to the starter when it won't crank. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. You should have 12v. If you do, most likely the starter is bad.

Let me know what you find.
