1998 Saturn SL2 transmissions

It wont go in to 2nd and when it does it slips out. It goes in to all the rest its a manual transmission. I recently pulled the engine to replace. The cluch and I put it back together. The way the book said. I checked. The shifter cables and they are fine

It shifted smoothly the only other thing I can think it could be is that the transmission is going out

On the transmission side of the shift cables where the crimps are can you see bare cable?

Yes I can see bare cable I have the cable out right now it looks like its in good condition. But what I can't figer out is why it would work fine one week and not the next.

If the cable is showing bare cable then the cable has stretched pulled from the crimp and can cause shifting issues. If the linkage and cables are moving like it should it could be the shift tower on the transmission or the transmission itself.
