I tried to start my car and it started shuddered then shut off. I had to do this a few times before I could get it to stay on. What could the problem be?

Probably a loss of fuel or spark. 1st I would try (in this order) a fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel pump, and distributor cap and rotor. Is the check engine light on. It may also be a sensor but try whatever is within your price range or try getting it tested.
