Can I bypass the A/C and use a shorter belt on my 1998 Grand Prix?

A/c motor is out and need to use a shorter belt to keep other parts working for a short time until a/c motor can be replaced. Will this idea work?

You can try, but it usually doesn't work. What to do is contact the local parts store. I have seen a replacement pulley (idler pulley) that will take the place of the compressor.
