How to fix timing on 98 Nissan Pathfinder - belt is fine

How do a fix the timing on a 98 Nissan Pathfinder??, v6, 3.3L engine, belt is fine, distributor was removed w/o markings made prior to removal, i can see notches on pulley, but cannot see notch to line up, Haynes manual diagrams are confusing, car tries to turn over at start, but cannot quite fully start - please advise on hopefully an easy way for me to repair this issue - thanks!! I was laid off from my job and cannot afford to seek a mechanic - any advice would greatly help.

you need to bring number 1 cylinder to top dead center on compression stroke and install the distributor with the rotor point at numer one in the cap.
