How much should it cost to replace fuel pump on 1998 Mercury Villager? I will be paying a company to do it. I have surging, losing horsepower on hills and while driving, it's not all the time, but may be getting worse. I'll be driving and everything is fine, then I go to push the gas, nothing will happen, then all of a sudden it kicks back in and drives fine.

To have a shop replace a fuel pump for that will probably be around 300 or so, but with you have described so far it don't sound like a fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure first before you replace it. Let me know what it is.

They said I have a low pressure system, so they would have to get into the tank to check it, but both of them think it's the catalytic converter. Makes sense also- what do you think? Thanks for your help!

The fuel pressure should be 34 lbs at the test port on the fuel rail. As for cat it could be, exhaust flow needs to checked to see if it plugged or not.
