What would cause the engine in a 1998 Grand Cherokee with a 4.0L to start idling at 2000 RPM? It is not displaying any codes at all.

A vacuum leak. Check all hoses by listening for a hissing sound. You can also use a can of starting fluid but be very careful and do it before the engine gets hot.

A faulty throttle position sensor may cause an erratic idle, but you'll usually get a check engine light on the dash. If you get one, have computer scanned
