Why is my car overheating?

I was in my car idleing and noticed the temp gauge was going up finally it hit to the Hot. It has never ran hot. When I started driving down the road the temp went back down to normal. I checked the fluids and overflow no leaks and everything seemed fine. It didn't even smell like it was running hot but gauge showed it did. Could this be a faulty thermostat?

Start with the thermostat and make sure that the fan is turning on, start here.

Ensure you have sufficient cooant in system and the fans are working correctly
