This truck was my Dad's baby. He passed away last August, and I have been trying to get things up and running. The battery that was in it wasn't charging or holding a charge, so I replaced it. When we put in the new 12V battery, the alarm went off. We got that stopped with the fob. Then we started the engine and it stayed on for a few seconds and stopped. That happened a second time. Now, it won't start but it is trying really hard to turn over. So, things we have ruled out: No codes, not the starter because it's not clicking, fuel injection seems fine because we are smelling exhaust and it's trying to turn over. I have a charge box and could try jumping it, but I think I shouldn't have to do that since it's a new battery. Checked for corrosion haven't seen anything alarming because everything under the hood is in excellent condition because my Dad was so meticulous. We are concerned that the gas may have separated since the last time we were able to get it started and running was in February.

We are at a complete loss. Any advice is welcomed!

Thank you! :D

Hi,

If the fuel is from February, that isn't a concern. I do need a better understanding. When you try to start it, does the starter engage or does nothing happen?

Also, how long did it run before it stalled and wouldn't restart?

If the starter does engage and it won't run, I need you to try something. First, see if it starts for a couple of seconds if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, there is a fuel-related issue. If there is no change, I need you to check for spark to the spark plugs.

Here is a link that explains how to test the ignition:

If it is the starter that does not respond, take a look through this link:

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

The starter does engage, but it won't completely turnover. When it did start it stayed on for a few seconds before stalling.

When it did start, was it when you tried using starting fluid? That would indicate a fuel-related issue.

Also, could you record it cranking and upload it for me to hear?

Let me know. If you did perform the tests I mentioned above? That will point me in the right direction.

Let me know.
